Bedding such as comforters, quilts and other linens, as well as bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths, and window coverings, like draperies, blinds, valances and curtains are all areas where you can quickly change the character of a room, if not your entire home.
Unless you live in a smaller town setting or are near areas where there are lots of cabins, it may not be that simple to find these more rustic or Log Cabin Style patterns in your local stores. You may have much better success finding what you are looking for online. Check in the other areas of this website for some of our favorites as well as links to some great online suppliers.
Colors?
Even if you're not finding that special print in your local market, don't despair. Many of the nicest Log Cabin Style homes that we have seen actually use plain colored Linens and window coverings in colors that compliment their decor rather than trying to have these items be the focal point themselves. Either way works.
Just remember to use natural looking colors rather than some of the bright or even florescent colors that we have available today. (Unless of course that is the direction you are trying to take with your decor.)
Remember, that to some degree, the basic natural colors of plants like greens, tans, browns grays and blacks, tend to go well with the color of the flowers that grow on those plants. So reds, some pinks, the right shades of purple, most yellows, oranges and golds in the fall, and blues that match both the flowers and the water, all usually go nicely together if you choose carefully. This works especially well if you have some other multicolored focal points in the room that they can match colors with and play off of.
Or Log Cabin Themed Patterns?
The other alternative is to look for towels that actually have a Log Cabin Style motif. Maybe it's bears, deer, elk, pine trees, mountains or some other nature style design. We even saw a complete set with a hunting camo design recently! Depends on who you are decorating for, right?
If you have a conventional style home that you are trying to convert to the Log Cabin Style, these would go a long way all by themselves. Imagine a plain white bathroom decorated with some forest themed towels, curtains and a shower curtain. Just that alone would do a lot to change the tone of the room to a Log Cabin Style feel!
That being said, now imagine what you could do to that same picture with a simple color change, a few more appropriately themed accessories as discussed in some of the other articles in this series, and maybe an upgrade in your doors, trim or cabinets!
Log Cabin Style Comforters, Quilts & Linens
When choosing Log Cabin Style Bedding, be aware that the same basic principles apply as we discussed in the towel section. You can choose to go with simple natural colors to complement what you already have or you can use something that has its own Log Cabin Style Theme built right into the design and therefore becomes a focal point of your decor in and of itself.
With your bedding choices, you usually have two parts with two separate designs as part of most combos. You have the sheets and pillow cases as one part of the design and the comforter/quilt and pillow shams as the second part. Sometimes you can even add in a third element with the pillow shams or extra throw pillows being a contrasting color or design.
Your choice could be a special quilt that was created by hand just for this setting, or maybe a way to showcase a beautiful antique created by a favorite grandmother. Any way you choose to go, finding sheets to match or compliment should be relatively simple if you stay with solid natural colors.
Or you can go the modern, ultra-convenient way and pick out a full set from your favorite store put together by a professional decorator!
Log Cabin Style Window Coverings
The topic of window coverings encompasses draperies for larger windows, curtains for the smaller ones, blinds and valances that may be added to either one, or even used entirely on their own. In fact, have you ever considered using a valance to accent a large landscape painting or an architectural feature on an otherwise flat wall? Think about it!
While you can keep your drapes, curtains and valances simple and monochromatic, why not use them as way to really dress up your home? There are a myriad of designs for these items that all shout Log Cabin Style! Again, this is another quick way to completely change the mood of an otherwise plain and boring conventional home into something that brings in the feel of the great outdoors!
Even plain, natural colored drapes or curtains accented by a decorative valance with a wildlife or forest design can really set a room off. Actually, if it matches your other decorating ideas, a simple gingham checkerboard pattern in red, blue or green works quite well in a kitchen, bath or bedroom setting.
